a sore spot, we worked out that the 2l (volvo N series 4 pot) auto averaged just 9 mpg over a 5 week period.

Mostly short journeys which doesn't help of course.

Thirsty beasts these old lumps.

In comparison on the same journeys the 2l F4r Laguna is averaging 30.4 mpg! Crazy stuff.

What is the v6 and the diesel like?

Well since I have got it and including over an hour in traffic so far its averaged 25 mpg.

If I was not in the traffic jam I expect it would have been much higher.

90% motorway miles and the cruise set to 80 most of the time.

The cruise control of course is great, just annoying no one else on the road can control their foot properly, they speed up and slow down all the time.

So quite happy with that actually.

Regarding the box, it only locks up in 4th unless its put in low then it locks up.

I intend to do a flush of the box as the oil will never have been changed, current mileage is 116,500 ish so it could do with it.

I also bought a new CTS today and hopefully that will further help and put an end to it immediately going into closed loop operation when cold and stalling.

Now I read in the volvo docs that this box actually locks up in every gear but only at certain engine speeds (1.5-2000rpm I think) so it's actually a better box than you realise. It's probably not much use around town but on the longer journeys it should kick in a bit more.

25mpg doing an average of 80 with captain crusoe is actually pretty good but if you lower the speed you'll get even more out of it. Press the reset button while driving and watch the numbers at different speeds. At around 50 you'll see far greater MPG than at 70 and you'll still feel like king of the road even though others are overtaking

Careful when you change the ATF, the pipe isn't the same as you mentioned previously so you can't do a straight pump out / in like the Volvo guys. Instead empty it out and replace with the same amount - it will just dilute it so you will want to repeat a few weeks later once the clean stuff has circulated. I use two empty 6L water bottles which when stood side by side are perfect for measuring how much needs to go in.

Gotta love the safrane on the motorway, wonderful cars.

Not got it to lock up in any gear other than 4th (aside from L) when driving, needs to be doing over 40 mph before 4th locks up as well.

Not got a trip comp on my one, so having to do it the old fashioned way. I miss the trip especially since I'm used to it in the 19's and the Laguna.

I can't be doing with going slow. Thats why I am always on the look out for something faster, like a decent hayabusa (which I have started collecting turbo conversion bits for) to replace my cbr 1000.

I'll pull the cooler off as in my experience with oil coolers they tend to be full of debris, can get most of the fluid out of there as well, not all of it but enough to heavily dilute it. I may even be able to get the pump from one of my old workplaces to do it. Worst case might take it to Mackies which is a good place.

Heh, speed doesn't bother me in a safrane.. I love the car so much sometimes I nice steady cruise at 50 is rather relaxing

Thats why I'm a left lane hog  I often end up following the lorries ;)

Well I filled it the other night, not from empty I hasten add but 95 quid went in.

Done 42 miles now and the needle is still above the max, I'm now wondering if its stuck or not lol

Chances are when I use it later today the needle will have dropped a bit.

I now use the cruise pretty much all the time. The only issue is it doesn't accelerate the car fast enough with the button so I do have to use my foot occasionally, that and to tap the brake pedal to turn it off so I can coast as needed.

Are you kidding? - Sometimes when I re-engage my cruise control the car scares me to bits! (although admittedly thats different to increasing it with the button!). I re-engaged it once after clearing a roundabout and I'd never known it to do anything other than a gentle acceleration. I've no idea how the cruise control computer works out what rate of acceleration to use but it suddenly floored it from 25mph up to 60mph. I nearly dropped a brick  I also noticed that sometimes you can be in 3rd and when you floor it the car will drop not into 2nd but into 1st instead. I used to give a colleague a lift home / to work sometimes a few years back and he used to love it to bits.

As for the needle, I used to have a similar thing with the safrane I broke up last year/year before. The needle would stick though usually at the lower end. It would move eventually not just reliably. I was told it was the sender in the tank but it was such an old heap that I ended up dismantling it anyway so there was no point replacing it.

As for the lock up, your gearbox might be different in the 2L.. I think the doc I read was for the 2.5L box but I'm not sure if they have the same autobox or different. I'll see if I can find it and email it to you.

Well it you hit the recall button it does actually floor it, I was just using the other button.

The needle was fine, just had to go further to get it to move seemingly. A blast iat 3 figures last night droppe dit. However its now at 3/4's of a tank and has done 150 mile son the trip, I'm rather pleased, 150 miles with my sister driving it would be nearly empty. Amazing what actually goign more than 2 miles and more than 30 mph does.

Lock up, I have been playing.

If you engage l on the move it will lock up 2nd and 1st, also if it drops to first it won't go back up to second.

If you engaged 3, it will lock up in 3rd gear.

If you then go to drive it will flare up change to 4th as needed then lock up in 4th.

I keep meaning to get the plate numbe roff the box but other things get in the way. I was planning on an oil and filter change today but ended up doing oil and filters on other cars and a couple of cv's and taking a brand new car back to the dealer for an issue. Never get peace to do my own stuff.

filled it up again, £92 to top it off.

Works out at 26.78 mpg

Double what my sister got but still pretty rubbish. Need more power, won't have to work it as hard then ;)

You'll be lucky!

The 2.5 while having more power consumes a lot more juice so to be honest I don't think you'll be saving anything. The 2.5's we've had have all been thirstier than your 2L with the quoted MPG. I used to commute 18 miles to work and could never get above that figure.

The 2.5 is a great car/engine but it's god damned expensive to run. I'm about to get shot of mine (the road legal one) as I just can't run it anymore without employment - I'm skint!
