I got the safrane running again last week after an electrical gremlin with the autobox decided to go away after wiggling some wires.

Today for the first time in 1.5 years it has moved under its own power again. Only round the car park but it has moved! Brakes seemed ok, steering was a bit groany, still no fans, ecu light was on, autobox keeps lying about its fluid level but it actually bloody moved under its own power!

Unfortunately I still don't feel very enthusiastic about it as much as I used to love it

I feel your pain. I'm really doing lots of mileage now in mine (well 50 + miles per day) and I don't think it's ever felt so good. But it rarely gets a day off. The worst thing that can happen to a car is to not use it. I currently have 3 broken cars (2 x Lotus Esprit's and a Lotus Excel - seeing a pattern here?) and I could do with getting at least one of them roadworthy for when the Safrane goes in for it's makeover (rear wheel arches need a tidy up before the rust gets too much of a grip).

Days off for the ph2 volvo safranes aren't really needed tbh 610. I used to punish mine frequently. #3 which recently went to the melting pot (RIP '3', may your parts live on in '1') was driven around for donkeys with a blocked up breather and it still used to carry on without any hassle. Ok eventually it did grind to a halt (on a roundabout of all places lol) and I ended up doing the overhaul but these cars when in good running order will eat your 50 miles for breakkie.

The rust is the worst part for me. As you said, the worst thing is not using them. This has been sat in the residential car park for 3 years and while it could be much worse, the front subframe is bad, the shocks have started to rust, the area by the rear wiper arm is bubbling and the alloy in the engine bay (including the engine itself) has white stuff in various places. I've brushed a lot of the white stuff off but it does turn my stomach that this has happened to it in the first place.

I feel like I need to take the engine out again just to clean up the bay...
