My Saf is a '96 with the 2.5 Volvo unit and manual gearbox.
Those were not available here, the 2.5 was automatic only.

There's some better sound system and electric/air controlled seats.
Again we didn't get the air powered seats but they did in Ireland... life is so unfair
lol

i suppose there's a talking on board computer because i found a button that mutes the radio and puts "speech" on the screen.
Yes there is. There should be a speaker behind the panel under the steering wheel near the middle of the car. I've taken it off countless times and forgotten to plug the speaker back in - so that is the first thing to check. Failing that, you may have a dead voice synthesizer (or some other fault).

After sleeping a night and driving about a 100km i still have no regrets about the car :)
Despite the age of the ph2 safrane, most owners seem to feel the same. We have one that has been off the road for five years and i still cannot let it go. Instead of getting another newer car i've sunk stupid money into repairing the safrane. It's almost done... i just need permission from the missus to finish it

The soundproofing is awesome and ride feels pretty good for something as primitive as conventional suspension
You should see the springs on the front shock absorbers - they're very big. I had mine off and wire brushed them to remove the rust... my neighbour thought they had come from a lorry!

The engine is a small disappointment though, there isn't that much power with lower RPM and that's what i'd want for a car like this. But when i floor it, the 5 really gets going with a nice sound :D
Open it up on a good road with sports mode... then you'll like it a bit more

- ABS not working, and no light on the dash either. Is there a way to test the sensors from the ABS ECU connector or something? Judging by the pipes i guess the ABS unit is under the battery?
Any other good tips on locating the fault? Of course i need to check that the light on the dash is ok.
Check the fuse for the ABS - some people pull it out to avoid ABS trouble. On one safrane i had years ago the owner fitted a switch to the driver seat so that he could turn it off outside his house as he used to get snow and couldn't get up / down the hill - the abs used to give him hassle.

- Driver's seat broke when i was testing it, the frame broke loose on the outer front corner and the seat tilts back on in it's base. Looks like I might be able to weld it up in car if i can remove the outer side panel.
Do you mean the long black panel outside the car under the door? - There is a screw at the back of the wheel arch, screws on top of it under the door and some plastic fittings under it - which break and cannot be replaced.

- Some dead bulbs on the instrument panel and heater control buttons. Can anyone tell the type of the bulbs and how many of them should i need to change all of them? The ABS light too.
No idea what type of bulb, i just took mine from the previous safrane - and another safrane... and another... lol.

- Indicators don't go off when i turn the wheel straight. Is it the usual "button" on the stalk which is actuated by a nudge on the steering column?
Not sure what you mean about the button but the stalk failing to click off is a common problem - i've suffered this with all three safranes and if i'm honest, never investigated it.

- Door handles work poorly, they need to pe pulled all the way back to open doors. The driver's door need to be pulled in when opening it from inside. I guess they can be adjusted?
Not a clue.

- Sometimes when i adjust the heater, there appears a small "service" text on the bottom of the screen. What could be the problem? Some flap jamming up?
Replacing the entire panel solved that problem for me - it seems to be a climate panel fault. I'm not sure if its something renault programmed intentionally so that the owner would take it in for regular servicing / maintain the air con or if it is a fault that has developed somewhere else in the system but i replaced the panel and the service indicator didn't show up again - that made me think it was the panel itself and not the aircon system.
