Every other renault ever made has the 2 straps I'm fairly certain they didn't decide to just make a huge issue on their supposed flagship

Seriously chap, there is nothing normal about these cars. There is a reason why the mechies in the whole eastern half and central parts of my county refuse to look at this car. Even the renault specialists refuse to deal with it.

Personally I don't think its too bad mechanically but electronically it's a PITA.

Don't forget while you wouldn't think they'd make big issues on their flagship, they did want to build a reliable car that was of a better standard than other renaults at the time. That would kind of mean making some big changes to their normal way of building a car.

seems there is no other strap. What a pile of crap.

Essentially its less reliable than ANY other Renault in this regard.

I don't understand no one wanting to work on them its no different to a clio,5, megane or any other Renault tbh. Its much easier than say an espace for engine access etc.

The wiring is garbage the 19 is a far superior built machine in all honesty. All the mid 90 Renaults on are built down to a price rather than up to a standard. Wiring is where they all suffered, thin crappy wiring became the norm.

I still use early 90's wiring from 19 looms etc, its all still perfect and a lot heavier duty than the newer stuff. The laguna 2 and meganes etc basically have cat 5 for wiring, they always corrode and break.

Anyway I dug out a few big earth leads and I will strap another to mine. Funny thing is the Safrane is the only car I never done this too, all the others have extra earths added by me and funnily enough the Laguna 2 benefited the most from another (2 stock engine/box earth straps I added another and another wire from neg to chassis).

i,ve nver seen the springs

Not sure if you mean the customised springs or just normal safrane springs for the ph2 but if you mean normal, they are huge at the front. I remember Phil saying they're meant to be compressed by hydraullic press.. after I'd done it by hand lol

I,ve always thought that the 15 inch wheels look very small on a phase 2,but on my phase 1 V6 they look fine, just about right, strange,i thought that its very poor of Renault to use the same alloys on all Phase 2 cars 2.0 or 2.5.

Actually, I like the 15 inch wheels! Too many 'Street cred' cars like Audi and BMW have the big mean looking alloys that are supposed to make them desirable (while looking chavy). Plus a lot of them aren't as strong as the tyres aren't as thick / absorbent when it comes to shocks from the road surface. Call me old fashioned but I like the 15 inch alloys because they're nice looking and practical. The tyres are normal so they absorb more shock, the alloys aren't going to be of any interest to thieves and they look a bit more 'classic'. It also doesn't make the car look too obtrusive or aggressive on the road / motorway. Some cars with the bigger wheels over take you and leave you shaking your first at them after.

As for the 2L and 2.5L alloys it doesn't bother me that they are the same but I would have liked a few more designs. This is the normal 2/2.5L:

Renault Clio would have looked nice:

I also saw another set of chinon alloys on a laguna once with square type spokes / holes which I thought would look nice on a safrane (except for the 4 / 5 stud problem):

Those are rarer than rocking horse teeth on google images!

When I bought parts from a guy breaking a 2.2d ph1 I was meant to get the wheels, he was to call me back when he had others. We agreed a price etc never called though.

Anyway yesterday another coolant change (it was -4 this morning according to the cars and the wee thermometer hanging outside the house) and this morning bright and early I took it for its MOT which it passed. So its MOT'd until 30th October 2013.

Tax is up at the end of the month of course...

I am going to sell it, I have to really.

And 2 more jobs done.

The 5w tailgate running lights (both had blown, forgot about them)

Plus I finally got my finger out and sorted the wiper switch. Its so nice to be able to put it on the first click and not hold it to get it to work there.

I usually just give it a quick nudge upwards and it seems to do whatever it does to keep the circuit running.

I had to do the same, just a nudge and hold with a finger, if you let it go the wipers would just stop where they were on the screen.

Put up a few pics etc of it in the report on retro. Much nicer now not having to nudge it etc.

Hmm, I never had that problem where letting go would stop it.. I just literally tap it up and forget - it seems to do the rest. Had it with both safranes that had dodgy stalks.

What did you do to fix it? - were you able to fix the existing stalk or did you have to replace it?
