 Post subject: Parts in short supply

I,ve spent a bit of time looking up some Safrane parts at work recently but have noticed that Renault seem to be keeping very little in stock and even in France the parts are no longer supplied,so i suggest either look after what you have or maybe try and track down those rare spares now before its to late...

Yeah I've noticed quite a few parts can't be obtained anymore. It's caused a few hassles in the past. The high pressure power steering pipe is gone and no longer available which meant I had to get one bodged a few years ago (pig of a job too). Several other bits are also no longer available which is making life very hard as you don't even see them being broken very often now.

One of the best cars Renault ever made and they're doing their best to kill it. It really doesn't make a lot of sense especially with them trying to convince everyone that "they've changed".

Came to my car this morning to find all the power steering fuid all over the drive so suspect it may be the pipe has had it so that isn't good news. First real problem I've had in 11 years with the car.

No need to cry, thats almost certainly the low pressure return pipe. When I rang Ren-Oh about that a year or two back those were still available at approx £140 + vat. Its the high pressure (rather critical one) that is gone.

The low pressure one has a large metal pipe along it behind the radiator which is (as far as I know) to cool the pas fluid down on its return to the pump. These rot really badly as they're noit aluminium like the rad or AC condensor. They seem to be bog standard steel so naturally they'll rust away. A previous safrane we had suffered from this and the previous owner had simply had a replacement steel pipe welded into place. Granted it wasn't the right size but I never had any problems with the steering on that car.

Chin up 610, it'll be ok ;) I'm breaking my 2.5 at the moment and do have the low pressure return pipe but I must warn you.. it's in awful condition and a tap with your thumb would probably make it spill fluid. I'm keeping the high pressure as they're a pig but the low pressure can be hacked to fix it. If you want mine, say the word and for a tenner plus posties wages you can have it but be warned it may not live long if it survives the journey to you.

If its the steering rack then you're in trouble. They're available (or were last time I enquired) but about £500 reconditioned from Ren-Oh. You might get lucky elsewhere though. Unfortunately thats one bit I won't sell as I need it for the other safrane...

Cheers for the info. It does actually look like the low pressure one now I've had a good look so will get one from Renault once I get it on a ramp to confirm. It looks completely rotten! Thanks :-)

Thanks. I was going to ask as my local dealers aren't particularly helpful (although I've only used them to try and get Alpine parts which is now a complete waste of time as Renault have sold off all Alpine parts).

I would be grateful if you can check up the availability and let me know a price.

I had spent most of yesterday polishing the Safrane and treating the leather so she looked like new once again after a few hard weeks of use. Still looks like a new car.

I spent lunchtime looking up some normal parts for the V6,just to maybe store for the future,i was amazed to find there isn,t a single air filter in the U.K and you can,t get a throttle cable point blank,i will be making a list i think and i will start buying some parts,what should go on there??
I already have a few genuine new parts but items like calipers,pads,discs i will be able to get,but i,am thinking more along the lines of items that are main dealer only

Did the power steering fix on my car today. Took a few hours but the results were worth it. It is well worth checking this on all your cars if you haven't already as it is located in a place that gets maximum exposure from the elements. Mine was corroded and had a pin sized hole which meant the fluid was leaking. We reconditioned the pipe fixing the hole and then wirebrushing the whole pipe before primer and paint. I also waxoyled the rest of the pipes to protect them in the future. Will post up some photo's when I get chance but if anyone wants it reconditioning to better than new, I can get it done for approx £95 (depending on how bad the pipe is). Dave did check availability of the part and it is NLA so reconditioning is the only way.

Had a good look underneath my car too and it is as tidy underneath as it is above. Very good for a 15 year old car. Well happy. :-)
